Man Arrested for Felony Assault after Road Rage Shooting in Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Idaho — A man has been arrested and charged with felony assault after an alarming road rage incident that turned violent on Wednesday afternoon. The suspect, identified as Austin Viggers, was riding a racing-style motorcycle when he allegedly pulled a handgun and fired shots at another driver during a confrontation.

According to law enforcement, the incident unfolded around noon on Glenwood Street. Viggers reportedly maneuvered his motorcycle between lanes of traffic—an illegal move in Idaho—before pulling alongside the victim’s SUV. As tensions escalated, the victim opened his driver’s door, unintentionally bumping Viggers and causing him to fall.

In a troubling turn of events, as the victim attempted to leave the scene, Viggers fired three rounds at the SUV, all hitting the windshield. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Police quickly responded to the incident, locating both parties shortly thereafter—Viggers at a nearby business and the victim near Glenwood and Riverside. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Ada County Jail on charges of aggravated assault. Viggers is expected to face arraignment at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Garden City Police Chief Cory Stambaugh condemned the incident, stating, "This senseless incident could have ended with an innocent person being shot." He urged the public to exercise patience in the face of rising traffic congestion in the area and reminded residents to report any road rage incidents to the authorities.

As communities continue to grapple with increasing traffic issues, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of road rage and the need for responsible driving behavior.
