Paralympic Skier Arrested for Alleged Attempted Sexual Abuse of Children
LEHI, Utah (KSL.com) — Gilbert Camacho, a 24-year-old Paralympic skier, is facing serious allegations after being arrested in Utah County for attempting to sexually abuse two young girls aged 5 and 8. Camacho, who is affiliated with a ski team for Puerto Rico and listed on the National Ability Center’s alpine ski team, was taken into custody following an online undercover operation.
According to a police affidavit, Camacho had been communicating with someone he believed to be the mother of the two girls. In explicit messages, he arranged a meeting to carry out the abuse. Officers apprehended him in Lehi, where they discovered a firearm in his vehicle along with specific candy that he was instructed to bring for the children.
Upon questioning, Camacho claimed his intentions were not to harm the children but rather to "humiliate" their mother, alleging he aimed to confront her as part of a "vigilante" activity associated with a group called the "Miami Avengers." This group reportedly seeks to expose individuals trying to engage with minors for sexual purposes. Camacho indicated that he planned to record the encounter and post the footage online as a form of public shaming.
Despite his claims, police have cited the explicit nature of his communications as grounds for the charges. Camacho argued that due to his disabilities, he would not be capable of such acts, yet he was booked on charges of attempted rape and sodomy of a child. Authorities are seeking to hold him without bail pending formal charges.
The case has drawn significant attention, raising concerns about safety and the protection of children within the community.
