Trump Urges Congress to Retract Approved Spending Affected by DOGE

White House Seeks $9.4 Billion Spending Clawback Targeting Liberal Programs

In a striking move, the White House has formally requested Congress to approve a $9.4 billion rescission of previously allocated funds, particularly aimed at programs influenced by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This rescission process, which requires Congressional approval, reflects President Trump’s ongoing efforts to curtail expenditures seen as promoting liberal ideologies.

Despite its significance, the proposed rescission is unlikely to substantially impact the escalating U.S. national debt, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will reach around $7 trillion this year. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt emphasized ongoing budgetary strategies, hinting at possible future savings measures.

Targeted cuts include $8.3 billion from the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development. Specific programs under scrutiny include funding earmarked for combating xenophobia in Venezuela and initiatives for child nutrition in Madagascar. Notably, federal support for NPR and PBS faces elimination as part of the administration’s broader agenda to Reduce what they classify as wasteful spending.

Support for the rescission has emerged from the House Freedom Caucus, a coalition of the most conservative lawmakers. They have urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to expedite the proposal, showcasing their commitment to the Trump administration’s objectives.

The necessity for Congressional approval derives from the Impoundment Control Act of 1974, which mandates that presidents must formally disclose funds they intend to not utilize. While the administration insists it is operating within legal frameworks, critics argue it has previously withheld funds without proper authorization.

As the Trump administration continues to reshape fiscal policy, the outcome of this rescission proposal will be closely watched as a potential reflection of Congress’s alignment with the DOGE agenda.
