Press Release: New Boating Season Begins with Enhanced Measures Against Invasive Quagga Mussels
TWIN FALLS, Idaho — As boating enthusiasts return to the Snake River, the Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) is ramping up efforts to combat the invasive quagga mussel. Mandatory watercraft inspection and decontamination stations are now operational at popular launch sites, including Centennial Park, ensuring compliance among boaters.
The ISDA has revamped the layout of its hot wash stations, which are now an integral part of the boating experience. Local boaters, such as Nick and Valerie Winter, are adapting to these changes. "It doesn’t take too long," Nick remarked about the process, emphasizing its importance for the local ecosystem.
ISDA Invasive Species Bureau Chief, Nic Zurfluh, highlighted recent early-season monitoring, reporting that there have been no detections of quagga mussels in May or June, signaling a positive start to the season. In an effort to eliminate the invasive species, the department treated the Snake River with a chelated copper product this year and will continue monitoring efforts indefinitely.
Zurfluh discussed the comprehensive strategies undertaken by ISDA, including increased plankton net tows and scuba inspections for adult mussels. The department has doubled its statewide monitoring efforts, inspecting over 20,000 watercraft in the last month alone, of which about 10% were classified as high risk and needed hot washing.
"We must isolate issues related to quagga mussels in Idaho to prevent them from spreading," Zurfluh stated. Local boaters, while acknowledging the minor inconvenience, remain committed to preserving the natural beauty of the region. "We’re very fortunate to live in a beautiful area, and we need to keep it clean and protected," Nick Winter concluded.
ISDA’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection ensures that the Snake River remains a cherished resource for generations to come.
