Pedaling Toward Success: Pocatello’s Biking Program Boosts Student Achievement

Pocatello Middle Schoolers Pedal Toward Wellness with Ride for Focus Program

Pocatello, ID— A vibrant sea of middle schoolers donning bright green helmets has taken to the streets of Pocatello, thanks to a groundbreaking initiative known as the Ride for Focus (R4F) program. As part of a nationwide effort, the Pocatello/Chubbuck School District has become the first in the country to implement R4F at all middle schools, which aims to improve students’ social, emotional, and cognitive well-being through cycling.

Launched in the 2023-2024 school year at one school, the program quickly expanded to four, bolstered by a grant that provided bicycles, helmets, and curriculum. R4F sessions run for an hour, with students not only riding several times a week but also learning about bike maintenance and safety.

"Every time I go out biking, it just makes me feel happy," said Franklin Middle School student Kaiden Inskeep, highlighting the positive impact of the program. Educators have reported improved focus and behavior among participating students, with one student completing a math test for the first time following a bike ride.

"Our journey began with a research project examining cycling’s impact on students with ADHD," noted Outride’s executive director, David Wood. The results sparked a program which aims to offer students an outlet for stress and anxiety.

As the school year wrapped up, students celebrated their accomplishments with a community bike ride, escorted by local police to ensure safety. The successful collaboration between educators, local businesses, and law enforcement emphasizes the importance of community involvement in nurturing healthier outlets for students.

Irving Middle School teacher Natasha Lattin, who has spearheaded the program, emphasized, "It’s pretty amazing to see the entire community come together for our kids." With ongoing efforts to maintain the program, including fundraising and partnerships, the initiative continues to foster a culture of wellness in Pocatello.
