Idaho Outdoorsmen Publish New Book Celebrating the Wild

BLACKFOOT — A group of five passionate Idaho outdoorsmen has published "Call to Adventure: Stories by Real Idaho Outdoorsmen," now available on Amazon. Spearheaded by Blackfoot native Flint Nilsson, the book showcases true tales that encapsulate the essence, humor, and heart of life in Idaho’s wilderness.

The collaboration started as a storytelling community on Facebook called Hog Heads, where Nilsson encouraged fellow hunters and anglers to share their experiences. “I enjoy hearing their stories of success and failure,” said Nilsson, noting that the idea to compile these narratives into a book was well-received by his comrades: Allan Garner, Dayton Schild, James Voss, and Antonio Rodriguez.

The collection takes readers on vivid adventures, from battling giant trout at Henrys Lake to intense bear encounters and the subtle thrill of tracking mule deer. Nilsson’s story, “One Memorial Elk Hunt,” reflects on the profound connections forged in nature, blending the excitement of the chase with deeper sentiments.

Garner, who contributed five stories, expressed his emotional connection to the book, especially recalling fishing memories with his grandfather. He stated, “Writing helps me express what the Snake River means to me as an outdoorsman.”

The book’s engaging tone has drawn comparisons to renowned humorist Patrick McManus, combining humorous mishaps with the serene solitude of the wild. The authors aim to develop a series, with the next installment already underway.

“Call to Adventure” is dedicated to Nilsson’s sister, Julie Neff, who inspired and designed the cover. A book signing event is scheduled for July 12 at C-A-L Ranch in Ammon. The book is available in paperback and Kindle formats on Amazon and at local stores like Kesler’s in Blackfoot, preserving these outdoor stories for future generations.
