Chukars Show Improvement with Hot Start in Pioneer League
IDAHO FALLS – The Idaho Falls Chukars are off to an impressive start this season, entering Sunday’s game against Grand Junction on a five-game winning streak and having won eight of their last ten. After a disappointing 40-56 finish last season, the team appears revitalized, boasting 18 returning players who are making a significant impact. Second-year manager Troy Percival credits this improvement to the foundation built during the latter part of last season, focusing on assembling a team with the right chemistry and hard-working players.
Shortstop Benjamin Rosengard, currently leading the league with a .467 batting average and 19 RBIs, shared his thoughts on the team’s strong camaraderie, noting that “we have a great clubhouse.” As the Chukars strive to remain competitive in the Pioneer League, their initial success keeps them in the chase, especially against formidable opponents like the Rocky Mountain Vibes and Missoula.
Statistically, the Chukars are hitting .381 as a team, just behind the Vibes’ .392. With 26 home runs, they trail only Missoula’s 32. Defensively, the Chukars have shown considerable progress, dropping their earned run average from last season’s troubling 7.95 to a much-improved 4.30. Additionally, they have allowed only 57 walks so far, positioning themselves better in the league overall.
Individually, players like Trevor Rogers with a batting average of .438 and Spencer Rich’s six stolen bases are also excelling. On the pitching front, Connor Harrison and Gary Grosjean lead the league with three wins each, while Harrison’s 19 strikeouts underscore the optimism surrounding this revitalized Chukars team as they continue navigating a competitive season.
