Gate City Grays Fall to Smithfield Blue Sox in Season Opener
POCATELLO, ID – The Gate City Grays kicked off their 2025 baseball season with a home doubleheader against the Smithfield Blue Sox on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Grays (0-2), they were unable to secure a victory, losing both games 5-1 and 12-5. Team owner Terry Fredrickson noted that slow starts are a fixture for the Grays, a trend he expects to continue while several players are still returning from college commitments.
This year’s roster is primarily new, with 80% of the players unfamiliar to the fans and many debuting at Halliwell Park. The Grays had significant gaps in their lineup, with standout players like Easton and Slayder Watterson, Rogelio Gonzalez, and JD Gunderson yet to report. Despite the challenges, Fredrickson remains optimistic, assuring fans that the team has more talent on the way.
The season opener drew thousands of enthusiastic fans, demonstrating the local community’s deep connection to their team. Fredrickson expressed gratitude for the unwavering support, recalling an emotional interaction with a fan who offered to help fund team needs without expecting anything in return. “We don’t have this without them,” he emphasized.

The Grays will aim to bounce back on Wednesday when they visit the Logan Royals before returning home on June 20 to face the same rivals. As Fredrickson reassures fans, “This is a baseball town,” the community’s backing remains a cornerstone of the Grays’ pursuit of success this season.
