Katie Ledecky, Bobby Finke, and Gretchen Walsh achieved remarkable successes at the Toyota U.S. Swimming Championships, each winning three events, and will represent the U.S. at the World Championships in Singapore this July and August. Ledecky continued her dominance in the 1500m freestyle, extending her 15-year winning streak and recording a time of 15:36.76—over 25 seconds ahead of her competitors. She currently holds the fastest times this year in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyles. At the World Championships, she could add to her tally of 21 world titles and, if successful, could be just one title short of Michael Phelps’ record of 26.
Ledecky’s primary competitor is 18-year-old Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh, the Olympic silver medalist in the 400m freestyle who is the second-fastest woman in history for the 800m. Walsh also showcased her prowess by winning the 50m and 100m butterflies and the 50m freestyle, tying an American record in the latter with a time of 23.91 seconds.
Finke, who won gold in both the 800m and 1500m, also claimed victory in the 400m individual medley but will not compete in that event at the World Championships due to scheduling conflicts. Meanwhile, Jack Alexy set a record in the men’s 50m freestyle, becoming the second-fastest American ever in this event. Shaine Casas and Alex Walsh had standout performances in the individual medleys, marking the fastest times in their respective events this year. Highlights from the championships will be broadcast on NBC on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
