MERIDIAN, Idaho — This summer, the West Ada School District is making a significant effort to ensure that local children are well-fed while schools are closed. Over 375 meals were distributed on Monday at Tully Park in Meridian, providing essential nourishment to students and easing the financial burden on families.
Addison, a young Boise resident, eagerly shared her lunch experience, saying, "I like this place because I think it’s cool how they do free lunch for people who don’t have money." Her mother, Vanessa, praised the program, highlighting its importance for families, especially those struggling to cover summer expenses.
The free summer lunches not only offer nutritional support but also free up funds for essential back-to-school expenses, such as clothing and supplies. "There are kids that probably don’t have enough, and they rely on this,” Vanessa added.
The event itself was festive, featuring Westy the School Nutrition Dragon, the Meridian Library District’s bookmobile, and a smoothie bike, all aimed at promoting healthy eating and active lifestyles. Community partners like Dairy West and Simplot contributed to the initiative by donating milk and berries.
“This year has just been a different experience,” remarked Kailyn, a student from Meridian, who has participated in the program for several years. She and her peers emphasized the joy of gathering for meals and making new friends in the process.
