Attention Motorcyclists: Lane Splitting Is Not Allowed in Idaho

Idaho State Police Reminds Motorcyclists: Lane Splitting is Illegal

MERIDIAN – As warmer weather brings more motorcycles to Idaho roads, the Idaho State Police (ISP) is urging riders and drivers to be aware of the state’s laws regarding motorcycle operation. With an uptick in aggressive riding behavior this season, ISP is clarifying that lane splitting, lane filtering, and lane sharing are illegal in Idaho.

Lane splitting involves maneuvering a motorcycle between lanes of slow-moving or stopped traffic, while lane filtering refers to navigating through traffic at a stoplight. Additionally, lane sharing, or riding side-by-side in a single lane with another vehicle (except for other motorcycles), is prohibited. Each of these practices violates Idaho law, which mandates that motorcycles must remain in a single marked lane unless legally changing lanes.

ISP District 3 Captain Michael Winans emphasized the dangers of noncompliance: “Motorcyclists must obey the law. They have less protection than other vehicles and face a higher risk of serious injury or death in a crash. Lane splitting puts everyone at risk, and it’s not allowed in Idaho.”

The Idaho Motorcycle Riders Handbook warns that the unique handling requirements of motorcycles necessitate a full lane for safety. Riding between vehicles raises the likelihood of accidents due to unforeseen circumstances, such as turning vehicles or opening doors.

Violating these laws may result in traffic citations and fines, and could also impact liability in the event of an accident. To promote safe riding, ISP encourages motorcyclists to participate in certified safety training programs, such as the Idaho STAR program, which underscores the risks associated with illegal riding practices.

As motorcycle traffic continues to rise, ISP and local law enforcement will increase patrols to ensure roadway safety for all users.
