Shooting at Salt Lake City Protest Leaves One Critically Injured
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A shooting incident during a “No Kings” protest in downtown Salt Lake City on Saturday night left one person critically injured, prompting strong responses from city officials. Mayor Erin Mendenhall stated the violence does not reflect the spirit of the demonstration, which was intended as a peaceful protest against recent federal policy decisions.
The gunfire erupted around 8 p.m. as an estimated 10,000 protesters marched, expressing their dissent against the Trump administration. According to the Salt Lake City Police, three individuals believed to be connected to the shooting were taken into custody, one of whom was shot and transported to the hospital in serious condition. No motive has been confirmed, and police are working to identify the connections between the individuals.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with people fleeing as shots rang out. “I was shaking, I was very nervous,” said Autumn, a witness who ducked into a nearby garage. Another attendee, John Cedarland, recalled the fear and panic that surged through the crowd.
Governor Spencer Cox expressed concern over the incident, labeling it a “deeply troubling act of violence” that has no place in public demonstrations. The protest, organized by Salt Lake Indivisible, aimed to address issues ranging from democracy to systemic racism and immigrant rights.
Despite the violence, many attendees remained committed to advocating for their beliefs, calling for continued public engagement. “Our democracy is not yet dead, but it is barely breathing,” warned University of Utah law professor Teneille Brown at the event.
The police are actively investigating the shooting and have urged anyone with additional information to come forward. Mayor Mendenhall emphasized the need for calm and compassion within the community in the aftermath of this unsettling event.
