MALAD CITY — In a stunning display of dominance, the Malad Dragons secured their 13th straight district title with a 12-2 mercy-rule victory over the Declo Hornets in the 3A District 4-5 tournament. This remarkable streak means that the current seniors, including star pitcher Riglee Peterson, were preschoolers the last time Malad was not the champion.
Riglee Peterson, who has become a cornerstone of the Dragons’ success, expressed astonishment at the longevity of the team’s winning streak. "It’s insane," she said. Her head coach, Bri Adams, emphasized the team’s collective drive to honor the community: "They want to win and make everyone in Malad proud."
Peterson led the offense, starting with a home run on the first pitch of the game. She not only excels on the mound — throwing a perfect game just weeks prior — but also contributes significantly at bat, finishing the Declo match with a homer, a double, and two runs scored.
The Dragons capitalized on defensive errors from Declo, racking up runs early in the game. Peterson’s performance, combined with strong support from teammates like Hadlee Summers, who went 3-for-3, helped solidify Malad’s victory.
As the Dragons prepare for state play-in games scheduled for May 10, Adams noted the determination of her team. “They have a fire lit in them already,” she said, believing deeply in their potential to reclaim glory after a tough state championship loss last season.
